World Cup opening in the Biathlon: UYN athletes demonstrate the best achievements

The UYN biathletes started the world cup season with success. Dorothea Wierer impressed with two places in the sprint and pursuit races of Pokljuka in Slovenia and was thus able to build up her leadership in the rankings. The Slovakian ladies biathlon team also surprised us with strong results.

Right at the beginning of the season, there was a change. The first competition of the season didn’t take place in Swedish Östersund as normal, but in Slovenia for the first time. The reason? Östersund is hosting the biathlon world championships from 7 to 17 March 2019. The location change didn’t have a negative effect on our UYN athletes, however. Quite the opposite: Italian Dorothea Wierer won two podium places in the sprint and pursuit races, Slovakian Paulina Fialková secured a strong third place behind Wierer on Sunday.

Wierer takes world cup leading

It was just Finland’s Kaisa Mäkäräinen who could top Dorothea Wierer in spite of her quick and flawless shooting. On Saturday on the seven and a half kilometre-long sprint distance, her opponent was 14.8 seconds faster.

On Sunday in the pursuit race at ten kilometres, Wierer missed out on first place by 41.3 seconds. With 144 world cup points however, Dorothea Wierer remains number one in the biathlon women’s rankings. In the two other competitions of the first world cup stage, she also gave a strong performance. In the mixed stage, she landed on the podium with a third place, in the individuals, she achieved seventh place. Wierer will travel to the next station in Hochfilzen wearing the yellow jersey.

Slovak national team with top results

The Slovakian team gave us all a surprise: Paulina Fialková achieved sixth place on Saturday in the sprint. Anastasiya Kuzmina ended up with a good 18th place. Terezia Poliakova, Ivona Fialkova and Urška Poje placed in the midfield, the athletes Lea Einfalt and Polona Klemenčič in the last third.

Paulina Fialková topped her achievement of the day before with an outstanding third place behind Dorothea Wierer in the pursuit on Sunday. She reached the finish line +59.20 seconds after first place. In the individuals, Fialková achieved fourth place. With this strong achievement, the Slovakian is now securing third place in the rankings with 129 points. Anastasiya Kuzmina achieved 36th place in Sunday’s race, in the individuals, 25th place. In the mixed stage, Slovakia managed a strong 13th place.
