We announce a new partnership, between our brand of highly technical sportswear and this champion from Varese, northern Italy. UYN will also be supporting the “Stefano Garzelli Team” cycling school with our high-performance base layers and socks
A new and amazing partnership has formed in the world of cycling. Stefano Garzelli, superb winner of the Giro d’Italia 2000, is the latest ambassador to join Italian sportswear brand UYN – Unleash Your Nature. The partnership extends to the “Stefano Garzelli team”, founded and run by the champion from Varese himself. Over 70 young and talented cyclists attend the academy in Valencia, Spain. They will wear our highly technical base layers and socks as well as receiving UYN branded tracksuits, for downtime, and rucksacks.
“Astounded by the quality of UYN”
Garzelli will don the UYN Alpha Biking range on his bike, including the high performance shirt, bibs and jackets, and the functional base layer and technical socks we designed to meet the specific needs of cyclists. Bikes from the TITICI Road range will also accompany his rides, all hand- and custom-made for the former pink jersey winner. UYN and TITICI are both trademarks under Trerè Innovation, a company from Mantua in Italy.
“UYN is the first clothing brand with which I have chosen to collaborate since my retirement from professional sport in 2013,” said Garzelli. “I was given the chance to test out UYN kit during our recces of the Tour de France route for broadcaster RAI. The connection was immediate. Right from the start, the high quality of their products astounded me. I really believe in UYN and in TITICI, two of the most poignant examples of the Made in Italy merchandising mark: I want to do my bit and spread word of these brands around the world. I’m so happy UYN has also chosen to support the Stefano Garzelli Team school. That partnership will bring vital support to so many budding young cyclists.”
Giuseppe Bovo, UYN Brand Manager, added: “Garzelli’s career speaks for him. Class, professionalism, outstanding victories and the determination of a climber who does not shy away from the struggle posed by the toughest ascents. We believe he’s a true #UYNner - the perfect person to represent the UYN image in cycling. His lengthy experience will also serve as a vital point of reference as we develop and test new products.”
A career filled with success
One of the best climbers of his generation, but also a cyclist gifted with strength and bursts of speed. Stefano Garzelli was a key figure in professional cycling for some 17 seasons, beginning with his debut with Mercatone Uno in 1997 until his retirement in 2013 at the age of 40. The peloton paid him a moving tribute in honour of his final Giro d’Italia, having him ride ahead, the first to enter Brescia: a peers’ farewell to a true champion.
Indeed, the Giro d’Italia was the greatest success in his career. Garzelli won it in 2000, dominating the summit finish in Prato Nevoso and donning the leaders’ jersey in the penultimate stage: the Sestriere time trial. His trophy cabinet includes two green climbers’ jerseys in the Giro, significant victories in other stage races, such as the Tour de Suisse and the Tirreno-Adriatico, and one-day race wins, such as the Tre Valli Varesine. In the time since his retirement from professional sport, he has taken on the role of directeur sportif and remains a respected commentator on RAI channels. Today marks his official entrance into the team of #UYNners.
