#UYNner tales from the Nove Colli Gran Fondo 2019

It’s the oldest Gran Fondo in the world, a historic event - unmissable for anyone who loves cycling. On Sunday 19 May, more than 12,000 participants tackled the famous sequence of climbs, leading from the Cesenatico sea into the Romagnolo Apennines. The 49th Nove Colli was 200km of hard work and reward, sweat and exhilaration: it was cycling in its purest essence.

And UYN wouldn’t have missed it for the world. The Alpha Biking collection was a star in the exhibition area, grabbing the attention of so many visitors. But it also took part in the race itself - the natural habitat of this high-performance UYN collection. While distance and elevation placed high demands on the cyclists’ legs, the changeable weather and low temperatures were a tough test for the kit.

What should you put on for leaving the hotel and lining up at the start? How do you handle the toughest climbs and fastest descents? How do you stay sheltered during the showers, without compromising performance? We asked three #UYNners who put their faith in UYN cycling kit during the legendary Nove Colli.

Davide: “UYN creates the right conditions for you to give it your best”

On Sunday 21 July, Davide Cappelletti will attempt something huge: he will scale the Bisbino climb, in the Como area. Not just once but nine times in a row, until he has climbed a total of 8,848m - that’s the same height as Everest. His “Everesting” attempt won the ENDUdream contest and UYN is supporting it, providing kit for his training and for the event itself. Davide’s Nove Colli was a vital training event, as his extreme adventure draws ever closer.

“The day was perfect,” he told us. “I managed my effort well on all the climbs and it was a huge confidence boost for my Everest challenge. Some merit also goes to the UYN products, which created the right conditions for me to give it my best. I chose to wear the Motyon base layer under the Alpha jersey, to keep my body temperature under control despite the changeable weather. Your body doesn’t overheat when climbing - when you’re at maximum effort - because the kit instantly wicks away moisture and sweat. Then, on the descents, jersey’s the special structure prevents your body temperature from dropping suddenly. The Alpha bib shorts were a vital boost to my performance, too: comfortable, not restrictive and remaining in place throughout, preventing chafing. That high quality makes a huge difference over seven hours in the saddle.”

Andrea: “The perfect kit?  Packable, smart and breathable”

In what way does high-tech kit improve an amateur cyclist’s experience? Andrea Gini, UYN Area Manager, has the answer. “Jackets and vests must be smart and packable. In other words, they need to be light and easy to pack away, so you can carry them in your jersey pockets. I chose the short-sleeved UYN Alpha Rain Jacket for Nove Colli. It’s windproof and water resistant, so it offered protection against the rain. Body temperature control is another vital feature. The amateur cyclists line up at the start at five o’clock in the morning and don’t cross the finish line until midday, so they face huge temperature differences. Being able to wear garments like these from UYN with their high technical content, covering a wide range of temperatures, gives the rider a decisive advantage.”

Mattia: “With UYN kit, rain isn’t an issue”

Mattia Ragni is the Social Media Manager at UYN and a cycling enthusiast. “You have to look at the weather before a Gran Fondo. The forecast for Nove Colli was for temperatures of around 10°, with a chance of storms. So, I wore the Motyon base layer and the Alpha jersey with UYN arm warmers - quick to take off and put on. On the seventh climb of the day, Monte Pugliano, we faced rain - the UYN Packable Waterproof Jacket proved itself to be exceptional. The two-layered fabric and taped seams prevent water from getting in, while being so extraordinarily lightweight means you can stow it away quickly in the jersey’s back pocket. Wet feet could have been the only problem, but the fast-drying UYN Light socks left me to pedal away, as comfortable as I possibly could be.”
